Tell us about yourself?
My name is naina khan, I am clinical dietitian, did my MS in human nutrition & dietetics. My research work was based on diabetes type 2 and weight management . I worked in MH hospital RWP & CMH Attock, now i give online consultation from my instagram page ask_the_nutritionist.
Who and what gives you the most inspiration?
Well my inspiration is my religion, I am Muslim and i believe in day of judgement , I think this world is an exam , exam of what ALLAH has given us and how we deal with that blessing whether its money, beauty , health or knowledge… we should not forget results will be announced on that day. This is the reason i fear ALLAH and trying to please him, this effort gives me new energy daily and motivates me and helps me keep going.
What is the wackiest nutrition myths you have heard of?
Indian and Pakistani people are so much into “ thanda garam” concept. They always confirm, “ mam anda garam ha, acne na ho jaye or aam tu garam hota ha”, can we eat mangoes in summers? I always tell them you can eat mangoes in winters & oranges in summers lol. If its garam than why ALLAH blessed us with mangoes in summers and oranges in winters?? I want to tell you guys there is no thanda garam, its a myth, eating in moderation won’t harm you. I think they call garam to calorie dense food, still don’t know.
What do you think are the biggest misconception about dietitians?
The biggest misconception is, “if you want to lose weight consult dietitian” , we not only help to lose weight but can also correct your diet if you are suffering from liver disease, pancreatitis, kidney disease, IBS, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, allergies, piles, constipation, weight gain and many more. Dietitians are those who are responsible to protect the body from slipping away.
If you could change one thing about Pakistani’s nutrition/ fitness related habits what would you change?
I want to say skipping meals is not the solution if you want to lose weight, so many people came to me and say we eat one time a day still we are unable to lose weight, following malnourished diet will make you ill not healthy. Skipping one meal and eating double in next meal is the worst habit of many. Don’t do that please. Secondly if you want to lose weight, diet alone wont do miracles, No single food does miracles its a life style change. 100% exercise and 100% diet will help you to achieve your goal, and the most important thing is patience! The weight you put on from years you cant lose it in few days. You need to remain motivated otherwise you will get bore and will leave everything in middle of your journey.
What is next to you?
I want to educate my people, diet is not a one day game, its a life style change. Stop eating junk food, refined carbs, sugar and come towards healthy eating. Its better to adopt healthy life style than dying on hospital bed with so many diseases, as the famous saying is: “If you think the pursuit of good health is expensive and time consuming, try illness”.
