Mughal-E-Funk: Adding Bass To Mughal Era

What is the story behind the name ‘Mughal-E-Funk’?
Mughal-e-funk is the story of five musicians (Rakae Jamil (Sitar), Farhan Ali (Bass), Kami Paul (Drums), Rufus Shahzad (Keyboard) & Muhammad Aizaz (Classical Vocalist)) coming together to make original instrumental music both in the studio and in live performances. The concept comprises of a contemporary musical interpretation of the Mughal Era, and the compositions are named after the Mughal Emperors.
How was the Mughal-E-Funk formed?
At first, it was just about four session musicians getting together to make our own music. Playing for other musicians and bands made us feel stuck in a rut creatively, so we wanted to create something that would cater to our creative needs.
What was your inspiration to follow the Mughal art of music?
We felt it was important to connect with our historical roots. Secondly, the high aesthetics of the Mughals in art, music and architecture appealed to us greatly. Living in Lahore, we are surrounded by such monuments and cultural relics and felt a strong connection to them.
What is the biggest challenge that you faced as Mughal-E-Funk?
There are always many challenges encountered as a band in Pakistan. Firstly, creating a live performance that will reflect our theme. Secondly, trying to cater to every audience and figuring out which songs to play. Thirdly, making sure that we accurately or at least objectively present our information regarding the concept of Mughal-e-funk on stage. We can be a little inaccurate because of our lack of knowledge but we are working on that!
How has your experience been in Coke Studio and how has it helped in your careers?
The experience was electrifying, intense and overall awesome! It is too early to say but we believe we have received some positive feedback on our performance and that is always encouraging.
Any interesting memory that makes a particular gig you performed your favorite?
The ‘Heritage Now’ gig in October last year, which was our first ever gig. The response we got was pleasantly overwhelming, and gave us a beginning we could never imagine.
What is the most favorite song that you would like to perform?
No favorites, we love each song equally! Although we love playing Akbar because it has this grand epic feel to it!
What advice would you give to the upcoming singers (newcomers) of Pakistan?
Keep doing what you’re doing, don’t hold back and focus on being original, create your own identity through original compositions and songs.
