Nestle will partner with the “Clean Hunza Project” to recycle plastic waste
This past year has seen an immediate increase in companies working to better the environment and societies of places where they operate. Nestle is one of these companies which has advocated for greener lands and cleaner waters all around the world. In Pakistan, Nestle has collaborated with the Clean Hunza Project to recycle around 220,000 kgs of plastic waste.
The “Clean Hunza Project”, is part of District Council Hunza initiative to make it the first plastic bag free location in the country. There has been a huge increase in the number of tourists visiting Hunza and the Northern areas of Pakistan. Once the tourists are done with the vacation, they leave behind countless plastic waste. The District Council Hunza recognized this and agreed to partner with Nestle to help improve the situation. Nestle’s involvement in the project will focus on waste segregation, organization of the site and recycling system for Hunza. The District Council Hunza, GBWMC and support from KADO for raising awareness in the communities will aid Nestle in doing its job in a better and more refined manner.
Waqar Ahmad, Head of Corporate Affairs, Nestlé Pakistan, said, “This project marks the beginning of Nestlé Pakistan’s journey to reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging by improving the management and recycling of various kinds of plastic packaging, in line with UN SDGs. Globally we aim to make 100% of our packaging recyclable and reusable by 2025. The Clean Hunza Project is a pilot project with a focus on streamlining the management and recycling of plastic waste, with a forecast of increasing waste collection to 220,000 kgs by 2024. This project will result in lesser plastic ending up in water bodies downstream.”
