We spoke with our favorite male blogger Haseeb Sultan in an effort to understand more of his authentic self. To read about everything from style to lifestyle with some poetry thrown in, you can follow him on his Instagram, twitter and blog.
Blogger, dentist, writer: these define what you can do but who are you?
I think I don’t like putting labels on myself because I always try to do the things I like or am interested in, and labels in my head limit me from growing. But I would like to be known as “a creative” But of course, if I were to introduce myself, I would call myself just a dentist because that shuts people up and is sort of a closed-ended answer. But it depends on the person, and my mood really how I define myself.
How did it all start? Take us back to day 1.
I wanna say I get lucky and I’m automatically good at the things I want to do, but that would be a lie. I am the kind of person who puts in the effort to do the things he wants to be. I started with writing in 4th grade. I wrote a poem, my family loved it, I got congratulatory money from my late grandfather and I was like, YESSS! I CAN MONETIZE THIS! (I can’t, as I learned later in life) But I think I was always a creative liver. I would just move around furniture, doodle, make bouquets of flowers and plants from the garden, sing, act in school plays, so like, I think I have always been….creatively expressive.
What’s it like being a male fashion/beauty/lifestyle blogger in Pakistan considering how we treat gender roles?
It’s not as difficult as it looks. I think probably because I’m not in it for the views or the followers. My blog is just an extension of my life and it’s been generally good. Of course, I get people who make fun of me irl but I am lucky to have an amazing online support system. My followers are well educated and get me, and they’re always encouraging me to be myself and keep growing as a person. As far as gender roles are concerned, I see that people are starting to get more tolerant of men being different from the previous generation. But honestly, I don’t care about these things. I am who I am, and being me helps filter out the people who love me, and those who don’t like me. Its just more easy online to be surrounded by like-minded people. Also, why would anyone follow me if they hated me? 😉
You’ve also given a Ted Talk where you shared your story. Give us a TLDR, we’re gonna link it here.
Haha. The talk is about how I discovered the art of making lists through the book The Princess Diaries, and how making lists is such an integral part of my life as all my international publications ended up being listicles (GQ, Buzzfeed) and how I myself am a list of things. So basically, the talk is just a long love letter to listicles.
Define being a man.
You’ve also spoken up about important issues such as bullying recently. Do you think other influencers should also use their voice in a similar way?
I think influencers should talk about issues that they have faced personally, if bullying happens to be one of them, good enough. In this age, we need to encourage people to share their traumas, no matter what they are. There are so many people out there who need people like us to support them. So if influencers, collectively and honestly came together to make the internet a safe space for people, it would be amazing! But I wouldn’t want people to justtalk about bullying because I believe that influencers can make a bigger impact through honest experiences, be it whatever kind of trauma.
If you could style anyone, living or dead who’d it be?
Oh wow. That one made me think. I think Lord Byron.
Who do you look up to the most in your line of work?
I am very much inspired by Tavi Gevinson. She’s just been an amazing influence on my life, and how I think and approach the world. I cannot gush enough!
One thing we should all stop doing at once (Fashion/beauty related)
Look up to general fashion models/influencers for lifestyle inspiration. Look for someone with the same body type as yours, and the same socio-economic background. Oh, and don’t go to bed without washing your face! (this answer is more of a what-to-do haha!)
Advice for beginners?
I want to say be yourself, but recently I changed the quote to “Be your best self” and I think that would help get direction to be a better person/professional.
