Pinky Memsaab: Desi Expatriates in Dubai’s Light
Pinky Memsaab A Dubai Story was one of the most anticipated Pakistani flick after its trailer was hailed by Pakistani fans on Youtube.
Despite of all the hype, unfortunately, the movie does not present Dubai as the usual fancy city with all those high-rise buildings with glitter and glamour attached to it. It rather portrayed another side of Dubai in which an expatriate family is struggling with relations and how they develop over time from entirely ignoring each other to fully realize their responsibilities.
The story revolves around Pinky, a shy girl from Pakistan who flies to Dubai for the job of the maid, and Mehr, the Memsaab, who is a writer struggling with her career and family relations.

We see Pinky’s aspire to become like her Memsaab. She becomes more confident and begins to dress in modern clothes. Whereas, Mehr’s relationship with her husband continues to be estranged and enters serious complications. The film does have many plots but the relationship between Mehr and her husband, Hassan, becomes the heart of the movie. As the movie progresses, Pinky earns a place into the family and develops a strong bond with everyone. We get to know that Mehr and her husband had been quarreling over insignificant reasons. And the reason turns out to be the fear of their dreams and who they truly are. Later in the movie, we see that Hassan and Mehr begin to value each other as they slowly win their inner battles.
The movie does a fantastic job in portraying the difference between the lifestyles of two women who belong to the same country and live under different circumstances. The film also gives us a lesson to not be ignorant about their inner feelings. One has to deal with their own traumas before making the next move.
Another best part about the movie is the portrayal of characters by all the actors. The characters looked extremely real and may remind you of the people you meet in daily life. Hats-off to Shazia Ali Khan, the director of the movie, for bringing out this remarkable experience of living in Dubai to screens.

The only drawbacks we see are the sudden appearing and disappearing of some characters that do not allow us the time to get attached to them. In fact, we do not get attached to anyone except the main leading characters.
In short, the movie gives you a different perspective and experience of life in Dubai as an expatriate family and individuals, and a series of emotions attached to the characters and places.
