Puraani Jeans Aur Guitar to Branded Jeans Aur iPhone
While listening to some of the old hit pop singers of Pakistan on Youtube, yesterday, I came across this song of Ali Haider called ‘Puraani Jeans Aur Guitar. It was really surprising when I heard the lyrics and realized how much things have changed over a decade or two. I made a quick comparison about how the times have exchanged past things with what we have in present.
Fun Fact: If you have heard the song before, you’ll be singing it in your brain when you read the lyrics.
“Purani jeans aur guitar, Mohalle ki wo chhat aur mere yaar”
Trends surely have changed because youngsters these days never settle down for old clothes, especially, the ones who go to colleges and universities. They are more conscious about their fashion and looks rather than studies. They are more like, “Check kar Bhai ki branded Jeans!”
‘Mohalle ki wo chhat’ doesn’t exist anymore as our societies and housing styles have changed dramatically over the past few years.
“Wo raaton ko jaagna, Subah ghar jana kood ke deewar”
Yes. Raaton ko jaagna part is still true but not for hanging out with friends. It is because of the phones, gaming, youtube, assignments and what not! And of course, if one spends an entire day eating junk food and scrolling on the phone, they cannot possibly have the stamina to ‘ghar jana kood ke deewar’.
“Pohonchna college hamesha late. Wo sir ka kehna, “Get out from the class! Wo bahir jaa ke hamesha kehna, yahan ka system hi hai kharaab”
Coming late to the class hasn’t changed a bit. In fact, it is a kind of fashion trend to come late to the class, with messy or spiky hair and chewing gum. Looking like a rebel earns you respect and fame. It is quite the opposite of the song.
“Wo ja k canteen mein table bajaake, wo gaane gaana yaaron k saath”
This doesn’t happen anymore because we have music on our phones. Who needs to shout out songs at the top of their lungs in the middle of the college cafeteria, right? Wrong! Kids these days will never understand it.

“Wo Papa ka daantna. Wo kehna Mummy ka chhodein ji aap. Tumhein to bs nazar ata hai jahan mein beta mera hi kharaab”
Parenting has changed drastically over the past two decades. Even as a kid from 90s, I used to be very afraid of my parents. Whenever someone told me that Abu was asking about me or Ammi called me in her room, all the flashbacks of everything I did wrong instantly used to flash before my eyes. Only words like “@#$!*** ka Bacha!” from my father were enough to send me running and crying to my room.
Parents nowadays are more like friends to their children. They even take jokes and sarcasm from their children as a sign of coolness.
“Ladakpan ka wo pehla pyaar. Wo likhna haathon pe A + R. Wo khidki se jhaankna. Wo likhna letter unhein baar baar. Wo dena tofay mein sone ki baaliyan. Wo lena doston se paise udhaar”
Ladakpan ka wo pehla pyaar has become a literal thing today. 10-year-old kids have iPhones and a marital status of ‘it’s complicated’ on Facebook. When I was 10, my only love was cartoons and Lego.
Wo likhna hathon pe A + R is so old-fashioned. Lovers these days directly go for selfies of them together on social media and brag about their girlfriends or boyfriends. Writing letters or waiting to see each other kind of love is replaced by Whatsapp and Skype with an introduction of Janu, Shona, Baby, and Babu.
Well, the thing that hasn’t changed is that girls still accept expensive gifts like jewelry, branded dresses, and latest mobile phones. And your friends will be extremely supportive when it comes to giving gifts to your girlfriend. They will even go out with you to select it.
