Organizations often perceive training endeavors as a cost to the business and try to avoid these at their maximum. Seldom do they know this perceived cost is actually a long term benefit for the organization for gaining a competitive advantage and securing the highest market share. However they forget to introduce the effective training programs which result in their misperception about the trainings.
The effectiveness of a training program is highly dependent on the results focused to obtain from such programs. The training programs properly aligned with and focused to achieve the organizational vision, mission and goals bring high return on training investment. Sometimes, organizations view training as a solution to the issue. Training is not action centered rather it is a preparatory action which needs to be taken before the actual issue arises. It prepares the resources for the future challenges rather than a remedy to solve the immediate issues.
Organizations attach high hope and expectations from the training programs and view these as a rescue operation. However learning and training programs are just a part of the long term development programs.
“If you believe that training is expensive, it is because you do not know what ignorance costs. Companies that have the loyalty of their employees invest heavily in permanent training programs and promotion systems.”
An IBM study revealed that employees who feel they cannot develop in the company and fulfill their career goals are 12 times more likely to leave the company. Training is a retention tool. It instills commitment and loyalty in the employees. Employees feel empowered when they realize the organization’s investment in their skills and development.
